Response from Julie K. Daniels on Sat, Mar 14, 1998

Hmmm. Lots to think about here. I guess I would like to know just what definition of literacy is being used in this essay. Responding "correctly" to the teacher's assignment in terms of content? Organization? Sentence skills? You do talk about Standard English a bit--are you suggesting that this item should be integrated into the Academic Literacy Kit in a different way than it currently is?

As you can see, I'm just a bit confused about what exactly is the problem: Not listening to students enough? (I do, by the way, think this *is* a problem.) Not being willing to accept a range of possible responses from our students? (This may or may not be possible for every assignment, but I think good teaching depends upon this willingness to be open.) Not examining our own situatedness?

Your title suggests that I will get concrete suggestions for redesigning (the "kit" is such a concrete metaphor), yet I don't quite see them in here. I applaud the effort, however, and thank you for stimulating my thinking.
